BREAKDOWN:

SYNOPSIS:

Fifteen-year-old Heidi earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the U.S. In this hilarious, hopeful, and achingly human play, she resurrects her teenage self to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women and the founding document that shaped their lives. Nominated for two Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize finalist, Schreck’s boundary-breaking show breathes new life into our Constitution and explores how the document will shape the next generation of Americans. *Content warning: This play addresses many difficult issues, ranging from abortion to immigration to domestic abuse, and many things in between.

Most characters we encounter in the script are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns, and you will see that reflected in their descriptions. However, our casting seeks to be as inclusive as possible, and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to audition for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide. womenintheatrenashville@gmail.com

ROLES:

HEIDI - she/her. 40s-50s. Based on Heidi Schreck, a former teen debate champion who traveled the country giving speeches about the Constitution. Engaging, dynamic, smart, passionate, liberal, factual, and witty. Alternates between her teen and adult self throughout the play. Must be comfortable carrying what is, at its heart, a one-woman show with all that implies, and to improvise with the audience and teen debater on a limited basis.

MIKE - he/him. Any ethnicity. 40s and up. Heidi’s friend. First appears as an assertive American Legionnaire monitor, a stickler for the rules. Later turns into Heidi’s ally and assistant, reflective and genuine, representing positive male energy, gay.

TEEN DEBATER - she/her or they/them. Any ethnicity. 13-18 year old high school debater. Intelligent and passionate. Appears only in Act 2.  Ideally experienced in speech and debate. Comfortable with some improvisation within the confines of the show.  Anyone interested in this role should prepare a 30 second debate in favor or opposition of the following topic: “Should the Arts be funded and offered in public schools?”
