Playwriting Workshop: Ten Minutes, Two Characters, One New (Little!) Play

“Ten Minutes, Two Characters, One New (Little!) Play” is a one-day workshop designed for female-identifying playwrights at various stages in their careers, from novices to professionals. We’ll spend the morning briefly discussing playwriting basics and then responding to a series of writing prompts designed to develop character and conflict. Our subject matter will draw from women in history, women in fairy tales, and women in our lives. We’ll start the afternoon by patching together scenes and thinking about props, and then we’ll act out the plays and discuss their merits and possibilities. Registration is $20, and scholarships are available by contacting WomenInTheatreNashville@gmail.com. Claudia Barnett writes experimental dramas about women and history and science. Her plays, including Aglaonike’s Tiger, Theodosia Redux, and Witches Vanish, have been developed and performed at the Great Plains Theatre Conference, the Ingram New Works Lab, the Kennedy Center Page-to-Stage Festival, Stage Left Theatre, the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, the Tennessee Playwrights Studio, Venus Theatre, and the Women’s Voices Theater Festival. She won the Andaluz Award Jury Prize from Fusion Theatre. Her collaboration with Pipeline-Collective, Outside of Here, a 12-hour play featuring three dozen Nashville performers, premiered as a live broadcast event in 2021. She teaches playwriting at Middle Tennessee State University, where she also coordinates In Process: A Creative Writing Event Series. Her plays are published by Carnegie Mellon University Press.
